Blitz on unfair business practices intensifies

Government authorities have intensified their nationwide campaign against unfair business practices, extending operations on Tuesday to Makoni Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza.

The joint exercise, conducted in partnership with the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC), Zimbabwe Republic Police, and the Trade Measures Department, targets counterfeit goods, underweight packaging, misleading labelling, and expired products.

Officials said the campaign aims to safeguard consumers, raise awareness among businesses, and ensure fair competition in the marketplace.

Trade Measures inspector Marian Mapuranga told reporters that random spot checks are crucial for tackling illicit practices that particularly affect vulnerable customers.

"We want to make sure products are of the correct volume and quality so that customers get value for what they are purchasing," Mapuranga said.

CPC spokesperson Tom Muleya added that expired or unlabeled goods, as well as meat and dairy products sold outside approved outlets, would be confiscated without hesitation.

"Every product must carry a price tag and be within its expiry date. Customers deserve the quality they pay for," Muleya said.

While some wholesalers and retailers expressed frustration over surprise inspections, many welcomed the initiative, noting that it provided valuable guidance on compliance standards.

CPC Director Kudakwashe Muderere warned that offenders would face severe penalties.

"Those selling expired products will be prosecuted. Repeat offenders risk jail time under the Consumer Protection Act," Muderere said.

Authorities said the blitz is part of broader efforts to restore order in the retail sector, underscoring the government's commitment to protecting consumers and promoting fair trading across Zimbabwe.
