Zimbabwe Miners Federation president Wellington Takavarasha has said 200 - 300 tonnes of mercury is being smuggled out of the country.
Takavarasha raised concern at the beneficiaries of mineral resources particularly gold during days of 'gold rush'.
He said most of the gold is smuggled.
Takavarasha was addressing mining stakeholder in Bulawayo today during the 2015 Zimbabwe Provincial Alternative Mining Indabas (ZAMI) conference in Bulawayo.
"Who is benefiting more from our gold especially during the gold rush in many communities? Gold is being smuggled out of the country.
"On average, 200-300 tonnes of mercury is being smuggled of the country," he said.
However, he never gave any time period.
President of the Chiefs council, Chief Fortune Charumbira bemoaned the slow pace in amending the Mineral Act.
"We have been talking too long about amendment of Mines and Mineral Act but progress has been too slow. Why?."
