Mushandike Irrigation scheme and DuPont Pioneer in conjunction with Agritex have launched 30G21 and P3883w maize hybrid which is resistant to drought and a number of common diseases.
The new hybrid was launched at a field day held at Tazira homestead in Acton B recently.
Masvingo Mirror states that the hybrid has been hailed as drought resistant and is not easily affected by crop diseases such as grey leaf spot.
"30G21 product is a strong hybrid suitable for all environments which makes it easier for farmers to grow the crop anywhere. It is not easily affected by maize viruses such as grey leaf spot like other maize crops," said agronomist Jaison Muradzikwa.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture Davis Marapira thanked Dupont Pioneer for its research on 30G21 which he said was poised to increase maize production countrywide.
"I want to thank Dupont for the remarkable research for such a hybrid. The product will increase agricultural production and also harness productivity nationwide. This will improve our food security and also bring in foreign currency," said Marapira.
Farmers in villages around Mushandike were given the product as samples to grow and test productivity of the hybrid.
Agritex awarded Gilson and Tambudzai Tazira 50kg of fertiliser and ammonium nitrate for producing a harvest from 30G21 sample in Mushandike irrigation Scheme.
Senator Clemence Makwarimba, MP Ezra Chadzamira and Themba Nkatazo (managing director) graced the occasion
