THREE farmers from Chief Chireya village in Gokwe North district were left shell-shocked on Sunday after their 18 beasts worth about USD$7000 in total, succumbed to a bolt of lightning.
Gokwe North District Development Coordinator (DDC) Martin Musakanda confirmed the matter.
The cattle belonged to three different people; Nyasha Chivariro had 10, Richard Kapfumo had 5 and lastly, his brother Svorai Kapfumo had 3.
Musakanda said, "I can confirm we received a report pertaining to a disaster that hit three farmers in Madzivazvido Ward 3 under Chief Chireya in Gokwe North District".
Musakanda went on to state that the District Civil Protection Unit (CPU) committee visited the farmers for assessment and consolation. The Veterinary Services department also advised the farmers on the proper disposal methods which are to burn the carcasses and then bury them.
Alongside Musakanda Gokwe-Kabuyuni MP, Spencer Tshuma confirmed the incident as he was quoted saying, "this unfortunate incident happened as the two herdboys were about to cross the river".
Thankfully, the two herdboys were not hit, however, one got injured when one of the cattle's carcasses landed on him. Both mentioned speakers confirmed that the herdboy had to be pulled out from under the dead cow, but the harm was not fatal.
