The current surge in flu cases in Zimbabwe is attributed to the common cold associated with the winter season and is not related to Covid-19, according to the government.
Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere clarified this during a post-Cabinet briefing. Health and Child Care Minister Dr. Douglas Mombeshora reported that the increase in influenza-like illness is a seasonal phenomenon.
There have been 99,000 influenza cases reported in 2024 compared to 149,000 in 2023. No Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the past four weeks. People are advised to practice good hygiene, avoid large crowds, and stay home if symptomatic. The most vulnerable groups include children under six, the elderly, and adults with underlying conditions.
Influenza is an acute viral respiratory disease with symptoms such as fever, headache, sore throat, and cough. It spreads rapidly, causing seasonal outbreaks.
Authorities emphasize the importance of staying vigilant, maintaining healthy lifestyles, staying hydrated, keeping warm, and using common cold remedies as needed. Dr. Mombeshora noted no reported deaths from the flu and stated that comprehensive statistics would be compiled at the season's end.
