The leader of the Johanne the Fifth of Africa International Church, Archbishop Andyby Makururu, has declared that it is God's plan for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in power beyond the end of his second term in 2028, arguing that holding elections would be unnecessary.

Speaking in an interview with NewsDay on Tuesday, Makururu said elections in 2028 would only drain the country's resources and should be scrapped in favor of continuity under Mnangagwa.

"We want development in the country. This is why we are saying President Emmerson Mnangagwa should be around until 2030. We don't want to continue having elections. If we have elections time and again, it will cost us as a country," said Makururu.

Makururu, who has previously been seen alongside Mnangagwa at State House, emphasized that Zimbabwe's governance should not be influenced by Western practices but instead guided by local traditions and religious principles.

"We should not be guided by whites. We have our own traditional leaders. Elections are just nothing. We need development, something which is tangible. Let President Mnangagwa complete his vision," he added.

The church leader claimed to have received divine revelation supporting Mnangagwa's continued leadership. "As someone who was sent by God, we don't want elections. They are a waste of time. When God's time comes, He will speak. At the moment, it's President Mnangagwa who has been chosen."

Makururu further asserted that Vision 2030, Mnangagwa's developmental roadmap, was divinely inspired, stating: "That is what God has said. Vision 2030 is a vision set by God so that President Mnangagwa can continue to rule the country. God told me that ED should continue to rule until we are given a new leader."

Makururu's remarks align with Zanu-PF's resolution from its October 2023 annual conference, where the party proposed extending Mnangagwa's tenure from 2028 to 2030 to ensure the completion of Vision 2030.

While Mnangagwa has publicly denied any intention to extend his term beyond what is constitutionally allowed, his loyalists continue to champion the 2030 agenda.

The push has, however, caused divisions within Zanu-PF, with one faction rallying behind Mnangagwa and another supporting Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

Political analysts say such statements from religious leaders and the internal party rift reflect the growing debate over Zimbabwe's future political direction.
