John Pocock and Company celebrate 70 years of service in Bulawayo

From humble beginnings in a single-room office to becoming one of Bulawayo's most trusted names in real estate, John Pocock and Company is celebrating a remarkable 70-year milestone in 2025 - a testament to its resilience, integrity, and enduring commitment to the City of Kings.
Founded in 1955 by the late John Pocock, a former Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot, the company's history is deeply interwoven with that of Bulawayo itself. After being stationed in the city during the war, Pocock developed a deep affection for Bulawayo and chose to make it his permanent home. With little more than determination and a keen understanding of people, he launched his estate agency - starting from a modest room and promoting his services by knocking on doors across neighbourhoods.
Speaking to Chronicle, the company's commercial manager, Mr Darryl Friend, paid tribute to the founder's vision and passion. "After the war, Mr Pocock was stationed with the RAF in Bulawayo. He fell in love with the place and decided to make it his home. He started his estate agency after leaving the RAF, working alone from a modest office and advertising his services by knocking on doors across the city. The business soon grew, and he was later joined by his son. Together they developed an iconic Bulawayo agency, which has served many residents over the years," Mr Friend said.
Beyond its real estate services, the Pocock family made a lasting impact on the national property landscape. They were instrumental in the formation of the Estate Agents Council and played a significant role in the drafting of the Estate Agents Act, helping to establish ethical standards and protect both property buyers and sellers from malpractice.
Despite Zimbabwe's often turbulent economic environment, the company has maintained its footing in the property sector. Mr Friend noted that while rental yields have experienced fluctuations, real estate has largely remained a safe investment, particularly during times of high inflation.
"Rental returns have fluctuated due to various pressures, but property has generally provided a solid hedge against inflation. While Harare tends to command a premium in property values compared to Bulawayo, the difference isn't as stark as some might believe. For investors willing to look beyond the capital, Bulawayo offers excellent value," he said.
John Pocock and Company specialises in property sales, valuations, and management - services delivered by a loyal team, many of whom have been with the company for years. “We've always retained a core team of hardworking, long-serving professionals who form the backbone of our operation," Mr Friend said.
In recent years, the company moved its operations from the city centre to suburban premises, offering clients improved accessibility and secure parking - a practical shift in step with modern needs.
Reflecting on the legacy of the company, Mr Friend said the values instilled by John Pocock continue to guide the firm. “Pocock for Property continues to serve Bulawayo with the same enthusiasm, honesty, efficiency, and professionalism instilled by its founder back in 1955," he said.
As the company marks its 70th anniversary, it stands as a beacon of consistency and dedication, proud of its heritage and firmly rooted in the city it has helped shape over generations.
