Two Vapostori sect leaders from Plumtree in Matabeleland South have been sentenced to jail after assaulting a passerby over accusations of witchcraft.
Eriya Magumise, 25, and Trevor Mandishona, 29, both affiliated with the Johane Masowe eChishanu Nyenyedzimomwe sect, appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware. They were found guilty of assault and falsely accusing Ollys Mpofu of harboring goblins and a snake at his home.
The court sentenced the pair to 12 months in prison, with six months conditionally suspended. The remaining six months were converted to 210 hours of community service. In addition, they were ordered to pay a US$200 fine or face an extra month behind bars.
According to prosecutor Sheila Nyathi, the incident occurred on August 30 around 7:00 am, when Magumise and Mandishona confronted Mpofu as he passed by their shrine, alleging that his house contained a goblin and a snake. The accused allegedly threatened him with a knobkerrie and a machete before a report was made to authorities, resulting in their arrest.
