Police have warned misguided elements in society who are bent on causing mayhem to desist from engaging in political violence as the country prepares for the holding of a referendum and general elections.
Addressing invited guests and members of the ZRP Police Protection Unit at a belated end of year party held at the ZRP golf club, ZRP Commissioner Charles Mfandaidza called on police officers to be exemplary when executing their duties, saying society expects the police to display unparalleled loyalty and patriotism to the nation.
"May I warn members of the public to desist from engaging in political violence particularly those misguided elements with an insatiable desire of causing mayhem and discrediting our elections," said Commissioner Mfandaidza.
He urged members of the public to desist from offering bribes to police officers, saying the ZRP will take action against anyone who engages or fuels corruption.
Commissioner Mfandaidza assured the nation that the ZRP is committed to maintaining law and order and will be highly visible before, during and after the referendum as well as general elections both expected to be held this year.
The Police Protection Unit has the mandate of providing security services to senior government officials and diplomats.
According to police records, the unit last year registered a significant reduction in crimes committed at the various points of guard.
