Taxi driver's vehicle hijacked by armed passengers

A 29-year-old taxi driver, Godwin Maravanyika from Plot 90, Blanco Farm in Mvurwi, allegedly experienced horror following a daring robbery that occurred on September 22, 2025 (at around 9:30 pm), at the Genesis Service station near (Mvurwi) commuter omnibuses rank, when seven unknown male adults hijacked his white Toyota Probox vehicle.
Zimbabwe Republic Police's Mashonaland Central deputy spokesperson Assistant Inspector Lucy Chigwenhese confirmed that the accused persons, posing as passengers, created a distraction by feigning a disagreement over payment.
"One of them, armed with a machete, ordered everyone to lie down, while another drove the vehicle away. The accused persons sped off towards Mvurwi, leaving Maravanyika and his friend, Blessing Koga, stranded at the scene," Assistant Inspector Chigwenhese said.
Chigwenhese added that the duo was offered transport by a passing vehicle and was later ferried back to Mvurwi by another vehicle arranged by police at a roadblock in Guruve.
Maravanyika reported the incident to ZRP Mvurwi on September 23, 2025, at around 12:45 am. The total value stolen is estimated at US$6,000, and nothing has been recovered.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing, with the police appealing to anyone with information leading to imminent arrest of the suspects to come forward. Assistant Inspector Lucy Chigwenese, also stated that the police are working to locate the accused persons and recover the stolen vehicle.
