Mliswa challenges Chiwenga

Outspoken former independent Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has called on Vice President (Retired) General Constantino Chiwenga to address what he describes as "rogue" behavior by Chinese investors, raising questions about the consistency of the vice president's anti-corruption campaign.

Mliswa, who has recently voiced support for President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his bid to extend his rule to 2030, issued the plea in the context of a standoff between Bryden Country School in Chegutu and Shuntai Investments Private Limited. The Chinese company is constructing a cement plant near the elite private school, prompting health and safety concerns.

Despite a High Court order halting construction, Shuntai Investments has continued its operations, sparking suspicions that political protection or bribery may be at play.

"Hon VP, can you assist on this problem with Bryden? I also have a child there. The Chinese can't be preferred over us and our good education. As a leading light against corruption, can you kindly deal with this Chinese issue which has been ignored as they are protected from high up?" Mliswa posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

Mliswa further highlighted similar concerns in Hurungwe's Rengwe Conservancy, where local residents face potential displacement despite a court order, allegedly to make way for Chinese operators.

"I also have a Chinese problem in Rengwe with our 25-year lease under threat as a cartel in government wants to displace us and bring some Chinese. They are doing this despite a court order blocking that. I would appreciate your intervention very much. Fighting corruption starts now," he added.

While endorsing Chiwenga's anti-corruption efforts, Mliswa cautioned against the vice president weaponizing the campaign to target political rivals.

"I fully support VP Chiwenga's rallying call but the fight against corruption should not be weaponized as a political gadget against rivals. That won't produce results with national benefits but rather advance the agenda of a few," Mliswa said.

Mliswa's intervention comes amid intensifying Zanu PF succession tensions, with his support for Mnangagwa increasingly visible.
