Her name continues to echo in the minds of those who witnessed the Midlands State University (MSU) graduation ceremony in Kwekwe last month.
On September 11, in front of thousands of graduates and dignitaries, Sister Eva Zhorizho, a Catholic nun, walked to the podium more than 10 times to be capped by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Each trip was a recognition of her extraordinary academic performance, earning her a record-breaking 11 awards and making her the standout of the day.
Currently an Arts and Humanities teacher at Visitation Makumbe High School in Domboshava, Sister Eva was crowned the Best Student in the Faculty of Education. She graduated with a first-class Bachelor of Education Dual Honours Degree in Humanities.
"This is not luck at all. I believe it's God's grace and blessings," she said in an interview. "My awards are a testament to God's goodness and faithfulness. I am thankful for the support of my community and the guidance of my LCBL sisters."
Sister Eva belongs to the Little Children of Our Blessed Lady (LCBL), a Catholic congregation founded in 1932 by Archbishop Aston I. Chichester. The group focuses on empowering women and girls through education, skills development, and community service, with members serving in schools, hospitals, and pastoral work across Zimbabwe.
Her academic brilliance was recognised with multiple accolades, including the MSU Book Prize, Vice-Chancellor Award, Professor William L. Chigidi Award, the Commandant Award, Econet Wireless Award, Coral Soft Award, Loveck Mafunga Award - which comes with a fully sponsored Master's Degree at MSU - CBZ Award, Zinara Award, NetOne Award, and the Pizza Inn Floating Shield Award.
Born and raised in Chitomborwizi, a farming community in Mashonaland West's Makonde and Zvimba districts, Sister Eva's education began at Matoranjera Primary and Secondary schools. Her strong faith eventually led her to join the LCBL congregation, dedicating her life to service and education.
Reflecting on her journey, she offered encouragement to students: "To others, it is possible. Students should be focused in their studies and trust the Lord always."
Her achievement has not only set a new record for MSU but also inspired many across the academic and faith communities, showing how determination, faith, and dedication can combine to produce excellence.
