A 25-year-old Nyanga man's craving for beer turned violent and ultimately landed him in court after he attacked a Good Samaritan who tried to stop him from robbing a local shop.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Silvester Sande entered Hanyani Shop at Mukunza Business Centre on 12 April 2025 around 6PM and grabbed a quart of Black Label beer. He opened the bottle and attempted to walk out without paying.

When the shopkeeper, Techla Musona, tried to stop him, Sande became aggressive. A passer-by, Finhai Mhuruyengwe (45), intervened in an effort to prevent further violence - but Sande turned on him, striking him twice on the left leg with a farm brick before fleeing the scene.

Sande was later arrested and convicted of robbery. The court sentenced him to 22 months in prison, but 16 months were suspended, while the remaining six months were also suspended on condition he performs 560 hours of community service.

In a statement, the NPAZ condemned the violent conduct and urged the public to act responsibly.

"We urge members of the public to desist from senseless violent acts because they have serious consequences. Violence does not solve anything," said the NPAZ.

The incident has sparked discussion in the community about the growing trend of alcohol-related violence in rural business centres.
