Two South African men accused of following a Chiredzi man from South Africa to his rural homestead in Zimbabwe before violently robbing him and his wife of ZAR179 000 have been denied bail and will remain in remand prison.
Timothy Jekero (46) and Watson Simango (42), both of Johannesburg, South Africa, were denied bail by Chiredzi Regional Magistrate Judith Zuyu on Monday. The alleged crime occurred on December 28, 2025.
The two, together with a third accomplice identified as Mike Mathose, who is still at large, are facing charges of armed robbery and assault. They are accused of attacking Lameck Mahomu of Musengi Village, Chief Masivamele, Chiredzi, and his wife Tiselani Baloyi, before fleeing with a large sum of money.
According to the State, Mahomu had travelled from South Africa carrying ZAR179 000 in cash. The trio allegedly became aware that he was in possession of the money and followed him from South Africa to his homestead in Zimbabwe.
Prosecutors allege that the suspects later stormed Mahomu's house while armed with a pistol and demanded cash. Mahomu's hands were reportedly tied with shoelaces as the assailants assaulted his wife while demanding money.
Baloyi allegedly surrendered ZAR67 000, but the attackers continued assaulting both her and her husband, demanding more cash. Fearing for her husband's life after he sustained severe injuries, Baloyi handed over the remaining ZAR112 000.
The suspects are also accused of stealing Baloyi's Samsung cellphone before fleeing the scene.
Mahomu and his wife later filed a police report. Acting on a tip-off, detectives learnt that three South African men were attempting to board a South Africa-bound bus at Chiredzi bus rank. Police laid an ambush, leading to the arrest of Jekero and Simango, while Mathose escaped and remains on the run.
Police recovered ZAR75 790, a Samsung cellphone, and a pistol loaded with eight rounds of ammunition.
The matter was prosecuted by Rutendo Ndibwo. The two accused will remain in custody as investigations continue and efforts to apprehend the third suspect intensify.
