A 60-year-old woman from Marange has been arrested after allegedly torturing her granddaughter by placing hot roasted round nuts inside the child's clothes on Christmas Eve in an attempt to force her to confess to stealing US$20 from a tuck shop.
The incident allegedly occurred in Rubatso Village, where the minor had been staying with her grandmother after her mother remarried and relocated to Hot Springs.
According to police, the child sustained serious burns during the ordeal but was not taken to a medical facility for nearly a month, as her mother was initially reluctant to report the matter to authorities.
The case only came to light after details circulated on social media, prompting police intervention and the subsequent arrest of the grandmother.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident and the arrest.
"On December 24, 2025, the accused person sent the victim to a tuck shop and later alleged that she had stolen US$20," said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
"In an attempt to force her to confess, the grandmother poured roasted round nuts inside the victim's clothing twice. The victim was also assaulted."
He said the child contacted her mother the following day and informed her of the abuse, but the mother did not immediately visit due to financial constraints.
"On January 14, 2026, the mother visited the accused person, and the victim narrated the story and showed her the wounds. However, no police report was made at that time," he said.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka added that the mother initially intended to leave the child with the grandmother, but the victim refused and returned with her mother to Hot Springs.
"The victim's mother did not make a formal report because she did not want the grandmother to be arrested, as she was the one who had been looking after the child," he said.
Police were alerted after the matter was shared widely on social media platforms, leading to investigations and the grandmother's arrest on January 24, 2026.
"The complainant was referred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for examination and treatment," Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said. "The accused is expected to appear in court."
The case has sparked outrage online, with many calling for stronger action to protect children from abuse within families.
