Police in Mashonaland East have launched a manhunt for two armed men who raided Energy Park Service Station in Macheke, escaping with US$12 000 in cash and several cellphones.
The suspects reportedly used a Toyota Aqua, which belonged to a service station employee collecting money from Murambinda, Nyazura, and Macheke for banking in Harare. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Marondera, but the robbers remain at large.
According to National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the incident occurred on January 21, 2026, at around 10 a.m.
"Mr Tafadzwa Asado, who was tasked with collecting money from various Energy Park stations, arrived at Macheke to pick up US$3 097 from the staff," Comm Nyathi said.
"As soon as he entered the office, an armed man threatened him and two employees, forcing them to lie on the ground. The suspect took the cash, cellphones, office and car keys. A second armed man simultaneously attacked a fuel attendant outside, demanding money and scaring away a client."
The two perpetrators then fled in Asado's Toyota Aqua, heading towards Harare. The vehicle was recovered a few minutes later in Marondera, but the suspects had vanished.
Comm Nyathi said the robbery was reported immediately at Macheke Police Station, prompting investigations and patrols along the Harare-Mutare Road.
Authorities have urged anyone with information on the suspects' whereabouts to contact the nearest police station as investigations continue.
The daring attack has raised concerns about security at cash-in-transit operations and service stations in the region.
