Member of Parliament Fanuel Cumanzala has called on government to explain why Binga District has not been split into two administrative units despite its growing population, now estimated to exceed 160 000 people.

In questions submitted to the National Assembly, Cumanzala argued that the current colonial-era boundaries are no longer suitable for effective governance. He said dividing the district would improve administration, service delivery, and resource allocation, especially given increasing population movements from areas such as Gokwe and Lupane.

The legislator also raised serious concerns about the state of healthcare services in the district. He questioned the Ministry of Health and Child Care on plans to address long-standing challenges at Binga District Hospital, including a mortuary facility that has reportedly been non-operational for an extended period.

Cumanzala further demanded transparency on economic activity in the region, asking how much revenue is generated from mining operations in Binga and how those funds are being reinvested into local development in the Zambezi Valley.

He also sought clarity on government plans to rehabilitate the district hospital, which could pave the way for the establishment of a nursing training school to improve healthcare capacity in the area.

The MP's intervention highlights growing pressure on government to upgrade infrastructure and governance systems in fast-growing rural districts.
