Police have arrested two men for allegedly offering police officers bribes, the national police spokesperson Charity Charamba said Tuesday.
The two, Danisa Chikondere and Gerald Mashambanhaka, were arrested by police on different occasions for allegedly offering police officers bribes of $5 and $10 respectively.
Charamba said Chikondere was arrested along Masvingo-Harare highway after he tried to give a police officer manning a roadblock along the road a bribe so he could pass with his nine beasts without proper documentation.
Police said Chikondere had two sets of police clearance certificates for his beasts, with each form indicating that he was supposed to have 10 beasts when he had nine.
"Upon being questioned on the abnormality, he gave a police officer $5 who immediately arrested him," Charamba said.
On Mashambanhaka, the police said he was arrested in the city centre for illegally pirating and was taken to Mbare Police station.
"On the way, he offered the police officers who were escorting him a $10, bribe but they refused. He went on to put the money in a handbag of one of the police officers who immediately arrested him," she said.
In the past, police officers have been fingered to be fuelling corruption through bribe taking, but Charamba said the public were the agitators of graft.
