New British and EU Ambassadors to Zim give Mugabe same old message - restore rule of law!
"UK and other international investors see opportunities in Zimbabwe but need reassurance that the rule of law prevails and that the environment is predictable," said incoming British ambassador to Zimbabwe Catriona Laing.
"If there is progress on this, and the government is able to articulate this to investors, it will encourage more investment into Zimbabwe."
If President Mugabe was hoping to hear the discord within West created by former EU Ambassador Aldo Dell' Aricia he was in for a great disappointment. The incoming EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Van Damme, had the same message for President Mugabe - restore the rule of law
"The EU remains committed to further enhancing its engagement with Zimbabwe and I look forward to continuing with our efforts in order to support the necessary reforms towards a more prosperous and democratic State, based on the rule of law and respect for human rights," said Ambassador Damme.
There you have it President Mugabe as plain as the nose on your face; to restore normal relations with the West – God knows Zimbabwe needs the West's help to get out of this economic mess - first restore the rule of law in the country. It was you, Mr President, who shuttered all confidence in the rule of law by blatantly rigging the 31st July 2013 elections! How can any foreign donor or investor have any confidence the regime will uphold their property rights when it has so contemptuously and brazenly violate its own citizens' basic human rights including the right to a meaningful vote!
The US, EU and a number of other countries where the rule of law is held in high regard, refused to accept Zimbabwe's 2013 elections results and said so plainly at the time. So there is no misunderstanding at what point they lost confidence in the rule of law in Zimbabwe.
The only way to restore confidence in the rule of law now is for this Zanu PF regime to step down so that ALL the democratic reforms agreed in the GPA in 2008; the pre-requisite for free, fair and credible elections; can finally be implemented and fresh elections held. There is no other way out.
Zimbabwe has been is sinking deeper and deeper into this economic and political hell because there is no rule of law in the country. President Mugabe must now do the right thing to save the nation from all this unnecessary and tragic suffering and misery. He must step down now or he will be forced out of State House Colonel Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi style!
