The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, ZUJ, has indicated that it has been mandated by the Southern Africa Journalists Association, SAJA, to begin the process of registering the regional block's secretariat in Zimbabwe after resolving to move from their previous base in Johannesburg, South Africa.
"ZUJ and newly elected SAJA President, Michael Chideme, thanked unions and associations of journalists in the SADC region for their confidence in ZUJ," the union said.
"We feel humbled and honoured that we have been elected President of SAJA and given an opportunity to host the regional body's secretariat."
Chideme was elected at a SAJA congress held on 8 August in Harare. He beat former president, Felile Moholi of Lesotho.
Eduardo Constandinos of Mozambique was elected Vice President after prevailing over Angela Chishimba of Zambia.
Thembeka Dlamini of Swaziland won the elections for treasurer after prevailing over Chishimba.
Charles Mkula of Malawi defeated Tuwani Gumani of South Africa in elections for Committee Member with Felile Moholi winning the second slot for Committee Member.
The new executive has the task of appointing a General Secretary for SAJA. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services, George Charamba was the guest of honour.
