THREE members of the same family from Gutu died when a vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and hit a rock and a tree before overturning in Masvingo, police confirmed yesterday.

Martin Zetu (47) was travelling in a Nissan-hardbody vehicle with his wife, Enia Bere and daughter, Destiny Zetu when tragedy struck.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said the accident happened at the 127km peg along the Chivhu-Roy Road on Saturday at around 4.45PM.

"I have received a report of fatal road traffic accident which claimed three people, two on the spot. All deceased who were husband, wife and daughter belonged to the Zetu family of Zetu Village under Chief Makore area in Gutu.

The deceased's bodies were taken to Gutu Mission Hospital mortuary for post-mortem," said Insp Mazula.

She said Zetu, who was driving the vehicle, died on the way to the hospital while his wife and daughter died on the spot.

According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, most road accidents are as a result of human error.

About 93,4 percent of all accidents recorded during the 2014/2015 festive season were as a result of human error.

Between 2009 and 2014, an average of 1 824 people died each year due to road traffic accidents.
