Moyo plots Zanu-PF comeback

THE battleground for the Zanu PF Midlands provincial executive posts has been set with heavyweights casting their lots to contest for the chairperson's position.

Party sources yesterday said the incumbent Jason Machaya, Zanu-PF Midlands Development Association chairperson Larry Mavhima and former governor July Moyo would battle it out for the chairmanship.

Machaya, who is also the Midlands Provincial Affairs minister, wants to maintain his stranglehold at the helm of the party in the province while Mavhima, who lost the Zvishavane-Runde constituency in the primaries, is also seeking a strong comeback as the provincial chairperson.

Though Machaya and Mavhima have already expressed their interest for the post, Moyo - believed to be a strong ally of politburo member and Justice minister Emmerson Mnangagwa - was not available for comment yesterday.

"We are going to witness fireworks as heavyweights in the province jostle for the post of provincial chairperson," he said.

"Though Machaya is the favourite, the influence of Mavhima and Moyo cannot be ignored."

Machaya is believed to be aligned to Vice-President Joice Mujuru while both Mavhima and Moyo are said to belong to the Mnangagwa camp.

Moyo was in 2005 suspended alongside other Zanu PF provincial chairpersons who were linked to the so-called Tsholotsho declaration that allegedly sought to block Mujuru's elevation to the presidium.

However, he was pardoned together with other suspended chairpersons after years in the cold.

Machaya yesterday said he was a bit tied up, but promised to give Southern Eye the final list of candidates today.

"Come tomorrow (today), candidates are still submitting their CVs. I will give you the final list of interested candidates for all the provincial posts," Machaya said.

Zanu PF will this Saturday go for elections to choose the provincial executive committees.
