MONTHS after the world breathed a sigh of relief at news that former South African president and world icon Nelson Mandela was alive and well, social networks are abuzz with rumours that he is dead.
However, the rumours on social network Twitter were soon dismissed as a hoax.
Mandela's long-time assistant Zelda le Grange quashed the rumours and said there was no reason to worry.
President Jacob Zuma's spokesman Mac Maharaj also tweeted, saying "he is not aware that Mandela has passed away".
Ryk van Niekerk, editor of Moneyweb, also confirmed that its just a hoax, by tweeting, "I have just confirm[ed] this with a close family friend".
La Grange later tweeted, "You want a rumour to stop? Stop speaking about it. Thank you!!"
