School officials in northern Massachusetts were left red-faced earlier this week after some 6,500 students brought home lunch menus that featured "KKK chicken tenders."
"KKK" is the abbreviation for the controversial white supremacist group, the Klu Klux Klan.
Methuen Schools Superintendent Judith Scannell said the fried chicken fingers were supposed to be listed as "KK," meaning "Krispy, Krunchy," local Eagle-Tribune newspaper reported.
An unnamed school official accidentally "hit a third 'K'" while typing up the menu, Scannell said.
"I apologize for the School District if we offended anybody. This was cleaned up immediately and a new menu sent out," she said, adding that the staffer who made the typo was an "exemplary employee," the newspaper reported.
Corrected menus were sent home with students on Tuesday.
Scannell told the Eagle-Tribune that she hadn't received complaints from any parents, but that one parent called the district food service director.
