PARLIAMENT has invited members of the public to nominate six suitable people to serve on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) after being appointed by President Mnangagwa to replace commissioners whose terms will end in July.

In a statement, Parliament's Committee on Standing Rules and Orders (CSRO) said the public should nominate individuals to replace the six commissioners comprising four females and two males.

ZEC commissioners should be chosen for their integrity, experience and competence in both the public and private sectors.

"In terms of Section 238 (4) members of ZEC must be Zimbabwean citizens and chosen for their integrity and experience and for their competence in the conduct of affairs in the public or private sector.

Section 238 (5) further provides that such persons may be re-appointed for further six-year term," read the statement.

The nomination material includes a nomination form that can be obtained at Parliament offices or downloaded online, from the website: www.parlzim.gov.zw .

Nominations must be addressed to the clerk of parliament in envelopes clearly marked Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, and must either be posted, hand delivered or emailed to hrvacancies@parlzim.gov.zw or clerk@parlzim.gov.zw .

Functions of the commissioners include preparing, conducting and supervising Presidential, provincial council as well as National Council of Chiefs elections.

They are also required: "to compile voters' rolls and registers. To ensure the proper custody and maintenance of voters' roll and registers. To delimit constituencies, wards, and other electoral boundaries.

To accredit observers of elections and referendums, and to conduct and supervise voter education, as well as approve the form and procedure of ballot boxes."

ZEC also gives instructions to persons in the employment of the State or of a local authority for the purpose of ensuring the efficient, proper, free and fair conduct of any election or referendum.

It is also expected to receive and consider complaints from the public and to take such action in regard to the complaints as the Commission considers appropriate.

People are advised to use only one form for each nomination.
