A 58-YEAR-OLD man from Nyamandlovu in Matebeleland North province ran berserk and struck his neighbour with a metal rod several times on the head claiming he felt ashamed after his neighbour insulted him saying he had never had sex with a woman in his entire life.
Billiat Ncube appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza facing a charge of attempted murder.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded out of custody to 19 December for continuation of trial.
During trial, he claimed that the victim's words were hurtful and damaging to his reputation.
"The complainant accused me of being a stray person, stating that I had never had sexual relations with a woman. I felt ashamed because of that.
"The rod that he claims that I used to hurt him is very heavy. If l had used it to assault him, he would have died. I didn't attack him but I defended myself since we were fighting," he said.
State allegations against Ncube are that on 31 August, together with his neighbour Allen Chinyemba Moyo and other villagers were repairing the village paddock fence.
Moyo was wearing a cap emblazoned with the insignia of a local political party and Ncube then asked him why he was wearing a cap from a political party that he did not support.
The two had an argument and at the height of that quarrel Ncube struck Moyo with an iron bar several times on the head.
Moyo sustained a swollen face, head and a fractured tooth as a result of the attack.
The matter was reported to the police and investigations led to the arrest of Ncube.
Moyo was referred to hospital for medical examination and a medical report was produced in court.
