Cultural pride, culinary excellence and vibrant celebrations took centre stage at the United College of Education in Bulawayo as the 2026 Amai's Traditional Cookout Competition showcased Zimbabwe's rich cultural identity.

The event was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Tongai Mnangagwa, who reaffirmed the growing importance of tourism as a key driver of economic growth and community empowerment.

In his remarks, the Deputy Minister commended the First Lady, Auxillia Mnangagwa, for spearheading the initiative and transforming it into a nationwide movement that is boosting both domestic and international tourism.

He noted that the programme has stimulated the growth of restaurants and traditional food outlets across the country, creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs while promoting Zimbabwe's diverse culinary heritage.

"The Amai's Traditional Cookout Competition is not just about food, but about preserving our culture, empowering communities and positioning Zimbabwe as a unique tourism destination," he said.

The competition brought together participants from across the country, each presenting traditional dishes that reflect Zimbabwe's cultural diversity and heritage. Attendees were treated to a wide array of indigenous cuisines, highlighting the depth and richness of local gastronomy.

Organisers say the initiative is playing a pivotal role in reclaiming Zimbabwe's culinary narrative while advancing gastronomy tourism as a bridge between culture and business.

The programme also aligns with the broader national vision championed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, which seeks to achieve an upper middle‑income economy by 2030 through inclusive growth and strengthened partnerships across sectors.

As Zimbabwe continues to leverage its cultural assets, events such as the Amai's Traditional Cookout Competition are emerging as powerful platforms for promoting heritage, supporting local industries and enhancing the country's global tourism appeal.
