OF all the passion stories considered to be harrowing, this one involving a final year female student at the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo and her lover should be among the top list.
The student, Ratidzaishe Mupinga (23), was allegedly battered before being locked up for three days in her rented room in Selbourne Park suburb by her boyfriend Tafadzwa Mhambure (23), where she was forced to live amidst flies, filth and the foul smell from feaces in the bucket which she was using to relieve herself.
The confinement was allegedly meant to "fix" her for attempting to terminate their relationship after she discovered that her lover was cheating on her.
Mhambure is also a final year student at the same university.
As a result of her boyfriend's savage attack on her, Mupinga, failed to wake up for some days before she was taken to hospital where Mhambure lied to nurses that she had fallen down the stairs.
Circumstances are that Mhambure, who stays in Riverside suburb, visited Mupinga at her place of residence. It is reported that when Mhambure left his phone on the charger his girlfriend took it and went through its contents.
While going through it, Mupinga is alleged to have come across some "erotic" pictures of her boyfriend with another female student.
This did not go down well with her and she decided that they should immediately end their relationship.
The news to end the relationship was not well received by Mhambure who started shouting at his lover leading the two parties to trade insults. Mhambure, in a fit of rage, is alleged to have assaulted Mupinga with fists and booted feet all over the body.
Fearing for her life, the heavily battered Mupinga bolted out of the house where she met Nkululeko Ndlovu and narrated her ordeal to him. Ndlovu is alleged to have accompanied Mupinga back to her place of residence where they found Mhambure sleeping on the bed.
Ndlovu is alleged to have played the role of a peacemaker when he counselled them as a couple.
It is reported that when Ndlovu left the two lovebirds after giving them counselling, Mhambure secretly took his girlfriend's keys as she was bedridden and writhing in agony after she sustained a swollen face.
Mhambure locked the door and took the keys with him to his lodgings.
It is alleged that Mhambure locked up his lover for three days and instructed her to use a bucket whenever she wanted to relieve herself.
After realising that his girlfriend's health was deteriorating, Mhambure took her to United Bulawayo Hospitals where he lied to nurses who attended to her that she fell down the stairs.
After being quizzed by nurses of what had transpired, Mupinga later opened up that it was her boyfriend who had assaulted her.
The matter was reported to the police and investigations later led to the arrest of Mhambure.
Criminal charges of physical abuse and kidnapping were then filed against him.
The matter was however, later withdrawn before plea after Mupinga reportedly opted for an out of court settlement.
