MDC-T has selected its top official, Revai Muguti to replace the late Harare Proportional Representation (PR) MP, Ronia Bunjira, who succumbed to cancer last month.

Several MDC-T officials were reportedly jostling to fill the vacant seat and the matter had created backroom fights within the opposition party.

In a bid to defuse the potentially explosive matter, the party's executive decided to revert to the proportional representation list that was submitted to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) in 2013 and chose Muguti to fill the seat.

Harare provincial chairman Erick Murayi confirmed the replacement, adding they would now be waiting for formal procedures to be followed so Muguti will be sworn in in Parliament.

"Yes, she is the candidate. It was not through elections and you know that whenever we get into an election we submit a list of PR representatives with six people. Depending with the number of votes that we get, some will not make it to Parliament, but we will follow the order, to fill our number," he said.

"In this case, we have just taken the list from Zec and the next person was Muguti. We did this to avoid bickering, but, of course, there were other proposals. What we have done is the proper position and the legal position of our party and the country's Constitution."

Murayi said the matter was explained to the entire Chitungwiza and Harare executives and there was consensus that they should revert to the original list that is yet to be exhausted.

"People can say whatever they want to say, but the process that we followed is crystal clear."
