Chamisa's SA lawyer, Jeremy Gauntlett SC was born in Rhodesia?

The top South African lawyer who once advised Nelson Mandela and was part of a team helping MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa to overturn the results of last month's presidential poll was actually born in the then Rhodesia.

Jeremy Gauntlett who joined a team comprising Zimbabwean lawyers and high-profile South African advocates Dali Mpofu and Tembeka Ngcukaitobi in an attempt to overturn President Emmerson Mnangagwa's presidential poll win was born and went to school in Zimbabwe.


Below is Gauntlett SC's short curriculum vitae:

- Born and went to school in Zimbabwe. Beit Scholar, University of Stellenbosch and Rhodes Scholar, University of Oxford. Awarded Harvard Graduate Fellowship. Elected to Visiting Fellowship, New College, Oxford, to an honorary professorship at the University of Stellenbosch and as a Distinguished Fellow of the Bingham Centre, London.

- Member of Cape, Johannesburg and London Bars. Senior Counsel and Queen's Counsel, and a Bencher of the Middle Temple.

- Has served as chairman of Cape Bar Council (two terms), the General Council of the Bar of South Africa, a founding vice-president of the Bar for the International Criminal Court and past Council Member of the IBA.

- Also served from 1996-2006 as a member of SA Law Reform Commission and Judge of Appeal of the Kingdom of Lesotho from 1996-2010.

- Appointed to the Financial Markets Tribunal of Dubai and to the Shanghai International Arbitration Court in 2014.

- Practising at Brick Court Chambers, London and (from chambers in both Cape Town and Johannesburg).

- Elected by Convocation of the University of Cape Town to five successive terms as a member of Council; founding member of UCT Council Exco.

- Chancellor to the Archbishop of Cape Town, Archbishop Thabo Makhoba.

Jeremy Gauntlett has provided expert evidence on several occasions in relation to South African and Namibian commercial law, law of contract and tort and admiralty law. He practises at both the Cape and Johannesburg Bars, with chambers in both cities.
