FRESH fissures have emerged in MDC-Alliance party over the selection of Gweru's next mayor today. The opposition won all i8 council seats in Gweru in the just-ended July 30 harmonised elections, which gives it the right to choose the new mayor.
The Nelson Chamisa-led organisation reportedly agreed to give incumbent Councillor Charles Chikozho another mandate, but this is being openly challenged by four other councillors who are interested in the top job.
The councillors, former Gweru mayor Mr Hamutendi Kombayi, Mr Josiah Makombe, Mr Cleopas Shiri and Mr Albert aka% have reportedly defied the party directive and are all campaigning for the mayoral post.
Despite the divisions, Gweru City Council Chamber Secretary Mr Vakai Chikwekwe said the swearing-in ceremony and the subsequent election of the mayor will go on.
"The swearing-in of the new councillors in Gweru will be conducted on Tuesday August 4 and everything is in place for that," he said.
"The District Administrator will conduct the swearing-in ceremony of the councillors starting at 1600hrs.
"After the swearing-in ceremony, the councillors will then choose a mayor of their choice and also the chairpersons of the commissions."
