THREE Marondera Municipality firefighters were on Sunday night seriously injured after their fire tender veered off the road and rammed into a precast wall while on their way to attend to an incident.
When NewsDay visited the accident scene, the recently acquired fire fighting vehicle, which was extensively damaged, was still stuck on the Exhibition Showground wall along Ruzawi Road.
A council official, who was at the scene, said the three firefighters were on their way to attend to a fire at a house in Cherutombo high-density suburb when they were involved in the accident.
"The driver lost control before veering off the road and rammed into a precast wall.
The trio was admitted to Marondera Provincial Hospital.
The good news is that one of the victims was discharged, but two of them are still admitted," the official who refused to be named, said.
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the accident and said the driver, Clever Samanyanga (36), was in a critical condition.
"On approaching the 3km peg along Ruzawi Road, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to suspected speeding, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road before hitting a precast wall.
The driver is in a serious condition at a local hospital while the other two passengers were admitted as well.
"We are appealing to all drivers to exercise caution to ensure safety of both passengers and other road users," he said.
