Former Petrotrade Board Chairperson Tinomudaishe Chinyoka has described the arrest of CCC member and former Harare Mayor Herbert Gomba as a ploy by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the National prosecuting authority to embarrass President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Chinyoka was commenting on the recent arrest of Gomba who is being charged with perjury after using his father's address to register as a voter and allowing 12 other CCC members to use his address to register as voters.
Gomba appeared in court on Wednesday.
Said Chinyoka, "You'll be shocked to find that registering many people at one address is in fact not a crime. There is no upper limit to the number of registrations at an address. This is just another ploy by NPA and ZRP to embarrass the President- focus on corruption, not this nonsense."
Exiled former G40 Kingpin Professor Jonathan Moyo concurred with Chinyoka saying voters were allowed to use any address through signing affidavits.
"You are right Tino Chinyoka, there's no law prohibiting the registration of many people at one address; it's the genius of the affidavit; Zanu PF and the MDC have been doing it ever since; with the MDC outsmarting Zanu PF with the practice in urban areas; and Zanu PF in rural areas!" Moyo tweeted.
In an interview with state owned Herald, police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said Gomba handed himself over to the police and stands charged on the two counts.
"Mr Gomba was arrested by officers at Harare Central police when he surrendered himself in the company of his lawyer. He is facing perjury charges and contravening the Electoral Act," Nyathi said.
