Two activists from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in Kwekwe have been sentenced to three months in prison each for organizing an unsanctioned gathering in July. Nkosilathi Emmanuel Moyo and Albert Marashe were charged with contravening section 7 of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act.
Kwekwe magistrate Mildred Matuvi found them guilty and handed down a three-month jail sentence to each of them, with the option of paying a US$300 fine.
The prosecution's case was that in July, Moyo and Marashe organized an unsanctioned CCC procession in Mbizo suburb, which led to their arrest. During the same incident, Mbizo MP Corban Madzivanyika was also detained but later released. Both Moyo and Marashe had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge.
