Zapu to take advantage of CCC recalls by fielding local candidates

After failing to secure any parliamentary seats in the 210 constituencies during Zimbabwe's August elections, the opposition party Zapu has announced plans to participate in the upcoming by-elections triggered by recent recalls within the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
A dispute within the CCC, led by Sengezo Tshabangu, has resulted in the recall of 15 of its Members of Parliament (MPs), 17 Councillors, and nine Senators. This situation has created an opportunity for Zapu to field local candidates with the hope of securing representation in Parliament, particularly in Bulawayo, which was significantly affected by the CCC recalls.
Zapu, which did not field a presidential candidate in the previous election and failed to win any seats, conducted internal discussions and engaged with community leaders and residents before making the decision to participate in these by-elections. This move comes in response to calls from those who believe that they should not let the individuals responsible for these recalls go unopposed. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has scheduled the by-elections for December 9.
In light of these developments, Zapu has committed to fielding candidates in all the affected constituencies, subject to rigorous internal processes. The party is urging all progressive forces to support its candidates and help defend the democratic space that has been affected by these controversial recalls. It remains uncertain whether the CCC will also participate in the upcoming by-elections.
