3 killed in Lupane accident, 10 injured

On Monday around 10 PM, three individuals lost their lives, and ten others sustained injuries along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road when the truck they were traveling in veered into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with a Stallion Cruise Bus carrying 40 passengers. The tragic incident occurred at the 226 km peg along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road.

According to Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson, the identities of the three deceased individuals are yet to be confirmed by their next of kin. The bodies of the victims were transported to Hwange Colliery Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while some of the injured were admitted to the same hospital and St. Luke's Hospital.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi reiterated the police's warning against nighttime travel due to visibility and observation challenges, as most road traffic accidents occur during this period.

Additionally, on the same day, another fatal accident occurred along Donnybrook Road, Chizhanje area, Mabvuku, Harare, around 5 PM. A Howo truck with one passenger veered into oncoming traffic, resulting in a collision with a Toyota Hiace kombi carrying 13 passengers and subsequently a head-on collision with another Toyota Hiace kombi carrying five passengers.

As a result of this second accident, six individuals lost their lives, and twelve sustained injuries. Assistant Commissioner Nyathi provided the names of four of the deceased individuals, while the identities of the remaining two are pending confirmation by their next of kin.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi urged drivers to exercise caution and adhere to all road rules and regulations to prevent further loss of life.

Statistics from the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe for the year 2023 revealed a total of 51,924 reported accidents, resulting in 2,099 fatalities and 9,955 injuries on the country's roads.
