ZANU-PF's Director for Health Services, Retired Colonel Stanford Chigumira, has been arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) on charges of fraud.

Chigumira, a trained medical doctor, stands accused of soliciting a US$500 bribe from Mirriam Mverechena to secure a place for her son in the Primary Care Nurse Training Course for the September 2024 intake.

According to a statement released by ZACC, the alleged incident occurred after Mverechena's son was not granted admission into the program, despite the payment. Distressed by the situation, Mverechena reported the matter to both the Ministry of Health and ZACC, prompting an investigation and the eventual arrest of Dr. Chigumira.

"The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested Dr. Stanford Chigumira, Director for Health Services in Zanu-PF, on allegations of fraud. Dr. Chigumira is accused of soliciting and receiving a $500 payment from Mirriam Mverechena to facilitate securing a place for her son in the Primary Care Nurse Training Course for the September 2024 intake," the statement read.

The incident has raised concerns over corruption within the health sector, particularly regarding the recruitment processes for training programs. Chigumira is set to appear before the Harare Magistrate Court on Saturday, December 14, 2024, to face the charges.

This arrest follows ongoing efforts by the ZACC to crack down on corruption across various sectors in Zimbabwe.
