After a setback in his appointment at Bikita Rural District Council (RDC), Archibald Ncube has found a fresh opportunity to lead, assuming the role of Town Secretary at Shurugwi Town Council on May 16, 2025.

Ncube had earlier secured the Bikita RDC Chief Executive Officer position following the tragic suicide of former CEO Peter Chibhi. However, resistance from council members prevented him from taking up the post. Reports also suggest that Ncube had ranked second in the interview process, adding to the controversy surrounding the appointment.

The former Human Resources and Administration Officer at Chivi RDC has now shifted his focus to Shurugwi, where he replaces Engineer Francis Charamba, who had been serving as acting Town Secretary since Mr. Siziva Solomon's resignation in November 2021.

Local authority chairperson Fanuel Machiya highlighted Ncube's expertise and the crucial role he will play in managing the council's finances and steering the town towards growth.

"The Town Secretary is the accounting officer of Shurugwi Town Council, and Ncube's expertise will be crucial in ensuring the effective management of the council's finances," Machiya said.

Shurugwi, a scenic mining urban settlement with a population of approximately 23,000 people according to the last census, was upgraded to town status in 1976. It is governed by 13 elected councillors alongside four women representatives under proportional representation.

Machiya expressed optimism about Ncube's leadership, saying, "His appointment brings a wealth of experience to the council. Residents are looking forward to working with him to drive the development of the town. We are optimistic about his leadership and look forward to achieving our development goals under his guidance."

Despite its growth, Shurugwi faces challenges such as unregulated artisanal gold mining, which remains a significant issue in the area. With Ncube at the helm, the council hopes to address these challenges and improve the livelihoods of its residents through effective governance and strategic development.
