Toddler dies after falling into dish of hot porridge

A heartbreaking tragedy has struck a family in Nzovunde Village, Binga District, after a two-year-old child died from severe burns sustained when the toddler fell into a container of boiling porridge.

According to a statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the incident occurred on Tuesday, 3 June 2025. The toddler reportedly fell into a metal dish containing approximately 40 litres of hot porridge that had been left unattended.

Police said the dish was being used by the child's grandmother, who was preparing to brew traditional beer at the time of the incident. The toddler suffered critical burns and tragically passed away the following day, on Wednesday, 4 June 2025.

"The ZRP reports a tragic incident which occurred at Nzovunde Village, Binga, on 3 June 2025, where a two-year-old toddler fell into a metal dish containing approximately 40 litres of hot porridge. The toddler was severely burnt and succumbed to the injuries on 4 June 2025," read the statement.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, prompting renewed calls for increased child safety awareness in households, especially in rural areas where traditional cooking practices involve the use of open fires and large containers of hot food or liquids.

Authorities have urged families to be extra vigilant and ensure young children are kept away from potentially dangerous cooking areas to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
