A United Kingdom-based care worker, Erick Musoma, appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai facing allegations of defrauding a local job seeker by promising a certificate of sponsorship.
Musoma was remanded out of custody after the State consented to US$100 bail with conditions.
According to state prosecutor Lawrence Gangarawe, the complainant, Delight Delta Mhlanga, approached Musoma in January 2024 seeking assistance with paperwork to secure a certificate of sponsorship. Musoma allegedly agreed to help and charged US$3,900, payable in instalments.
The court heard that Musoma promised the process would be completed within six weeks and instructed Mhlanga to make payments through his cousin, Tatenda Mapfumo. The complainant reportedly paid the full amount but received no certificate within the agreed timeframe.
When Mhlanga followed up after six weeks, Musoma allegedly provided false assurances before becoming evasive. The complainant subsequently reported the matter to the police on January 14, 2025, leading to Musoma's arrest.
The case is ongoing as investigations continue.
