A policeman was fatally shot yesterday morning inside the charge office at Sanyati Police Station in a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the community.
The officer, identified as Constable Muchechesi, was attending to other members of the public when he was shot by Vengesai Mutasa, a suspect who had earlier escaped from a confrontation with detectives from the Homicide Unit.
Sources say Mutasa was cornered by detectives at his lodgings in Sunrise, Sanyati, around 10:30 pm on Saturday night but managed to flee naked, reportedly shooting two detectives in the legs during the encounter. The injured detectives were taken to Sanyati Baptist Hospital for medical treatment.
Moments after the shooting at his home, Mutasa made his way to Sanyati Police Station, where he allegedly opened fire on Constable Muchechesi inside the charge office in what appeared to be an act of retaliation.
"The incident was like a movie, where the officers were caught unaware," said one source. "Two officers were injured in the shootout. He bolted from the scene and landed at the charge office, where he discharged his weapon towards the unsuspecting officer, gunning him down. He claimed it was revenge following attempts to arrest him."
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing. "Investigations are still ongoing, our officers are at the scene right now. We will issue a detailed statement soon," he said.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for Mutasa, who remains at large.
