A Harare magistrate has cancelled the warrant of arrest issued against Robert Tinotenda Mugabe, the son of the late former President Robert Mugabe, after he failed to appear in court for his routine remand hearing on Thursday.
Mugabe, who is out on bail, voluntarily appeared before the court on Friday accompanied by his lawyer, Mr Arshiel Mugiya, to explain his absence.
Magistrate Artwell Sanyatwe accepted his explanation but imposed a US$30 fine for failing to attend court as scheduled. Mugabe was ordered to return to court on November 13, when his trial is expected to commence.
Mugabe was arrested last month during a police traffic operation in Harare after allegedly driving against traffic on a one-way stretch of Second Street Extension (Sam Nujoma Extension Street).
Upon being stopped, police reportedly found two sachets of dagga, a pack of Rizla rolling papers, and a dagga crusher in his sling bag. The drugs, weighing approximately two grammes and valued at US$30, were confirmed by police analysts.
He is facing charges of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs, in violation of Zimbabwe's drug control laws.
Mugabe Jr's case has attracted public attention due to his family background and his occasional brushes with the law in recent years.
The magistrate emphasized that the court expected full compliance with bail conditions going forward, warning that future absences could lead to the revocation of bail.
