Ex-combatants head to High Court for bail

Ten ex-combatants accused of plotting to mobilise a public protest against President Emmerson Mnangagwa have been remanded in custody to November 25, 2025, pending completion of police investigations.

The group, led by 65-year-old Rose Chirenje, appeared virtually before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo yesterday. They face charges of participating in a gathering with intent to promote public violence.

The court ordered that the accused apply for bail at the High Court.

According to the State, the group allegedly conspired to incite members of the public to take part in an unsanctioned demonstration - dubbed the One Million Man March - that was being organised by Blessed Runesu Geza.

Prosecutors said the protest was intended to denounce President Mnangagwa, whom the organisers accused of betraying the people of Zimbabwe by allegedly siding with what they described as "zviganandas," or criminal saboteurs.

The ex-combatants reportedly accused the President of condoning corruption, looting, and the formalisation of thievery in government, as well as mutilating the national Constitution.

Investigators allege that on October 17, the accused gathered at the corner of George Silundika Avenue and Sam Nujoma Street, near Africa Unity Square, intending to march to Robert Gabriel Mugabe Square, the planned venue for the protest.

The court heard that Geza had earlier mobilised participants for the march through Facebook and WhatsApp platforms.

All ten accused remain in custody as police continue investigations into what authorities describe as an attempt to promote public disorder under the guise of political activism.
