President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed Geo Pomona Waste Management Executive Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer Dr Dilesh Nguwaya as his Special Advisor on Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability.
The appointment was announced by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, who said it recognises Dr Nguwaya's contribution to environmental protection, recycling and sustainable waste management.
Dr Rushwaya said Dr Nguwaya has led a number of initiatives aimed at improving waste management in Harare, including the introduction of door-to-door refuse collection, the installation of skip bins in the central business district, strengthened recycling programmes and projects that have created employment opportunities for women and young people.
According to the Government, Dr Nguwaya's experience in the waste management sector will provide strategic guidance as Zimbabwe seeks to improve environmental sustainability and modernise waste management systems nationwide.
Dr Nguwaya heads Geo Pomona Waste Management, the company responsible for operating the Pomona Waste-to-Energy project in Harare.
His appointment comes while Geo Pomona Waste Management remains linked to an ongoing criminal case involving Bulawayo24 News journalist Gideon Madzikatidze.
Madzikatidze was arrested after publishing a news article alleging that Geo Pomona Waste Management had bribed media practitioners to suppress scrutiny of the company's operations. The company disputed the allegations, and criminal proceedings were subsequently instituted against the journalist.
He is facing two charges: providing a broadcasting service without a licence, in alleged contravention of Section 7(1), as read with Section 4(b), of the Broadcasting Services Act [Chapter 12:06], and cyberbullying under Section 164B of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23].
Madzikatidze spent nearly three months in custody before being granted bail by the High Court on 15 May 2026. Justice Rodgers Manyangadze allowed his appeal on the basis of changed circumstances after the State failed to provide a trial date following the dismissal of his earlier bail application.
The journalist maintains that the charges are a response to his reporting on Geo Pomona Waste Management, while the criminal case remains before the courts. No court has determined the merits of either the allegations contained in his article or the charges against him.
