Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries founder Prophet Walter Magaya has been granted US$3,000 bail by the Harare High Court, following his arrest last week on rape and fraud charges linked to a botched housing project.

Justice Gibson Mandaza granted the bail application on Monday, allowing the embattled preacher temporary freedom pending trial.

Magaya's arrest stemmed from allegations that he defrauded congregants of thousands of dollars through a failed residential housing project run under his ministry. Prosecutors allege that funds collected for the project were misappropriated, leaving several investors and church members without the promised homes.

The charismatic preacher is expected to return to court on November 18 for routine remand.

His co-accused, wife Tendai Magaya and bodyguard Tapiwa Chikondo, were granted bail by the Harare Magistrates Court last week. Chikondo faces an additional charge of resisting law officers during Magaya's arrest.

Magaya, who commands one of Zimbabwe's largest Pentecostal congregations, has faced several legal controversies over the years but has consistently maintained his innocence.

Meanwhile, legal analysts say the case has reignited public debate over accountability and financial transparency within large religious organisations in Zimbabwe.
