A 37-year-old man from Mandaza Village under Chief Nyamweda in Mhondoro has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of raping and assaulting his 56-year-old mother-in-law.
Walter Maponga was found guilty by Harare regional magistrate Jessie Kufa, who ruled that the State had successfully established a strong case against him.
The prosecution, led by Mr Blessed Songozo, told the court that the incident occurred on September 17, 2025, at Makoni Village. The complainant was in her bedroom with her 94-year-old mother when Maponga forcibly broke into the room.
According to the State, Maponga assaulted the complainant while accusing her of influencing his wife to leave him. He then overpowered her, pinned her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.
The court heard that the woman was rescued by two villagers, Godfrey Makoni and Cleopas Nziramasanga, who intervened and apprehended Maponga.
Magistrate Kufa handed down the 15-year jail term, condemning Maponga's actions as brutal and inexcusable.
