The Government of Zimbabwe has formally joined the Pfizer Accord for a Healthier World, a high-level agreement designed to provide equitable access to patented medicines and vaccines on a not-for-profit basis. The accord was signed in Harare by Douglas Mombeshora, Minister of Health and Child Care, alongside Abdelali Belasri, Pfizer's Vice President of Global Market Access.
The agreement aims to reduce disparities in medical access between Zimbabwe and high-income countries, with a focus on infectious diseases, oncology, and rare inflammatory conditions. Minister Mombeshora said the accord aligns with the country's National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) and Vision 2030, which seeks to achieve upper middle-income status by fostering a healthy and productive population.
At the ceremony, Minister Mombeshora highlighted that the accord will strengthen Zimbabwe's medical distribution network and provide access to Pfizer's portfolio of patented medicines on a not-for-profit basis. The framework is expected to offer a sustainable procurement model that shields the national health budget from global market volatility, ensuring timely and affordable access to innovative health products.
"Like many nations, Zimbabwe continues to face challenges in ensuring timely, affordable access to innovative medicines and vaccines," Minister Mombeshora said. "Through this accord, we look forward not only to expanding access to essential health products, but also to strengthening the systems that guarantee their efficient and equitable delivery to our people."
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Second Republic under President Emmerson Mnangagwa to ensure that the benefits of the accord reach both urban and rural communities, emphasizing partnership, mutual accountability, and shared responsibility.
Mr Belasri noted Pfizer's commitment to making its medicines and vaccines available to Zimbabweans on a not-for-profit basis, stressing that access is only the first step. "We want to work with you to understand your specific needs so that we can co-create solutions to strengthen the health system in Zimbabwe," he said.
The accord represents a major step toward improving health equity in Zimbabwe, strengthening governance in medical distribution, and ensuring sustainable access to critical treatments for the nation's population.
