Parents in Murowa Ward, Zvishavane district, have raised concern over the safety of a School Development Committee (SDC) member who is reportedly receiving threats after exposing alleged corruption and financial mismanagement at a local school.
In a letter addressed to the media, the parents said the SDC member’s life was now in danger following revelations of alleged abuse of office, tender manipulation, misappropriation of school funds and suspected ZIMRA tax clearance fraud by school administrators.
“Our concern is buttressed by the fact that the headmaster is known for being violent and physical, as he once beat a female student teacher on teaching practice, leaving her for dead,” the parents wrote.
They alleged that in the previous incident, the headmaster and his wife broke down a school house door and window panes to gain entry before assaulting the student teacher.
“Surely the law must protect young and vulnerable student teachers against bullying male chauvinists,” the letter read.
The parents said cases of financial mismanagement in schools should not be ignored, warning that such conduct was contributing to the deterioration of public education infrastructure.
“Headmasters who use hard‑to‑get school fees for their personal gains must be expeditiously dealt with by the law so as to restore confidence among poor parents who work very hard to raise fees,” they said.
The parents appealed for the protection of the SDC member, saying they were “praying for his safety and wellbeing”.
The letter was signed by Concerned Parents, Murowa Ward, Zvishavane district.
