An armed robber linked to the high-profile ZB Bank US$2.7 million heist has reportedly cooperated with police after approaching authorities to report his brother, who allegedly spent part of the stolen money.

Alfred Shumba, who fled to South Africa in 2021 after leaving his share of the loot in his brother's custody, was remanded in custody by Harare Magistrate Jessie Kufa to April 3. He faces an armed robbery charge and was advised to seek bail at the High Court.

Shumba reportedly turned in his brother after he allegedly squandered US$150 000 from the heist. While Shumba's brother was arrested, a Harare court later acquitted him.

According to police investigations, on January 6, 2021, Shumba and accomplices orchestrated a plan to rob a cash-in-transit crew transporting seven cash boxes containing US$2 775 000. It is alleged that one crew member, Fanuel Musakwa, coordinated with the robbers during transit.

The cash, intended for distribution to ZB Bank branches in Chinhoyi, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Gweru, Bulawayo (Fife Street branch), Gwanda, and Zvishavane, was collected along the route. Investigators said that at Inkomo tollgate, the crew picked up one box containing ZWL43 090, meant for deposit at the bank.

While driving toward Chinhoyi, the vehicle's driver allegedly picked up three accomplices at Inkomo Turnoff, who posed as genuine passengers. At the 60km peg, some of these accomplices reportedly produced a pistol, threatening the crew. A red twin-cab vehicle carrying additional armed accomplices then arrived.

The robbers allegedly seized a pistol and rifle from the crew, offloaded the cash boxes in a secluded area, and transferred them to another vehicle driven by Gerald Rutizirira.

Shumba and his accomplices are said to have transported the stolen money to a farm west of Nyabira, where they broke open the boxes, absconded with US$2 775 000 and ZW$43 090, shared the proceeds, and dumped the empty boxes.

The matter remains before the courts as authorities continue investigations into the heist and the distribution of the stolen funds.
