A deluge of reactions online has trailed TIME Magazine's declaration of US President-Elect Donald Trump as its 'Person Of The Year'.

On its cover page, the influential magazine described Trump as 'President Of The Divided States Of America', stating that he takes over the helm of affairs at a time of great uncertainty.

TIME Editor-in-Chief Nancy Gibbs explained, "This is the 90th time we have named the person who had the greatest influence, for better or worse, on the events of the year. So which is it this year: better or worse? The challenge for Donald Trump is how profoundly the country disagrees about the answer. It's hard to measure the scale of his disruption…"

Twitter users were quick to reminisce how the award had been won by equally divisive figures in the past, including the likes of Adolf Hitler and Vladmir Putin.

The shortlist of eleven included figures such as Beyoncé, Turkish President Recep Erdogan and Brexit spokesman Nigel Farage. Hillary Clinton was announced as the runner-up to Trump, the magazine stating that "the winner of the popular vote" is now leaving "a complicated legacy".

Followers of Nigerian 'Prophet' T.B. Joshua have been quick to recall that in his controversial prophecy about the US elections, the cleric actually declared Trump would be the recipient of such an award.

"After the election, they should award him the man of the year," Joshua said of Trump on November 6th 2016, saluting the business mogul for his courage in the face of challenges. "Challenges don't mean anything to him. The more you abuse him, they more he comes out to talk and smile," he stated.

TIME began awarding its Person of the Year honour in 1927 when the title was called Man of the Year. The profile covers whichever person, group, idea or object that "has done the most to influence the events of the year".

"For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow's political culture by demolishing yesterday's, Donald Trump is TIME's 2016 Person of the Year," the magazine said in its concluding remarks on their controversial winner.
